Pendulum - Live

This is a video of a live performance of Pendulum at a concert. Watching this gave us the ideas of having the band playing in the video, and being the main focus of the storyline.
Using the idea of lights and smoke machines.

Pendulum - Tarantula

This is the video to the song we chose. Originally there is no video to go with the song.

Faithless - ADD IN PHOTO

Another band i researched was 'Faithless'. Just like with The Prodigy the bands have the same sort of image/appearance in common. The photos are of the band live in action. the instruments that the band used are clearly identifiable and almost like a trademark for the band. The photos are from a fan site of Faithless. However the band breaks the stereotype, the main man is black, and a female is a min singer in the group. The colours' used within the photographs are negative colours such as blacks, greens and dirty yellows, all the colours' are bright and vibrant, again going with the ''apperance image''.

ADD PHOTO FROM HOME!

The Prodigy

These are some pictures from The Prodigy fan website, in the 'Gallery' section. You can see that the lighting used at the live band performances have a high contrast and complement the setting. In all of the shots there use a smoke machine in use which gives a Erie atmosphere. The image of the band is quite a scruffy look, and each band member has several piercings and tattoos. The faces of each of the band are quite scary and within the performance it appears that they really get into the motion of performing. I looked at the The Prodigy because they are a similar like band to the band i am studying, Pendulum; the same appearance runs throughout all bands that are of a similar Genre.

Some of the images are dark on one side, this could portray the dark side of the band, again portraying the Erie feel to the band and the image. The picture at the top in the middle is the stage set that The Prodigy used at a live concert, the stage is sets o that the whole audience can see what's going on.

Th colour's used;
Blue - Cold
Pink /Red - Passion/Anger
Black - Dark
Orange - vibrant contrast

All of the photos above are the band in action, this highlights crazy lifestyle, which again fits with the genre of the band.

This is the second complete Shooting Schedule with the changed dates, that were possible for us to film on. By having a shooting schedule it allowed us to be clear with what we were filming and when, and what props and stuff we needed. By having to make a second one, it made us aware that we had to double check we could defiantly use the props and locations we wanted before setting it onto paper.

Shooting Schedule

This is the first shooting schedule that we had planned, however after beggining to film, the days had to change as cetrain people that we needed to be in our film, couldnt make it. It had to be re - scheduled for the band shots and also because there was issues with the locations we wanted to use.

Graphic...

The graphic theory can be applied to this video, the costume in simple to whole way throughout, with similar shapes, such as boxes; the bed, the window, the mirror, to graphic match onto the next shot of the video. Within the video there is graphic discontinuity, this meaning there being strong colour clashes throughout.

Rhythmic...

The rhythmic theory applies to this video, each of the shots are roughly the same length of time, and count of beats, and there is a variation of both fast and slow shots in order for the audience to be able to take in the story of the plot, and allow thinking time. Some of the shots in the video have transitions on the beat and the tempo compliments the speed of the music.

Temporal...

The temporal theory applies to this video, this concerns the plots and the manipulation of time. Within this video the audience see a daily routine of what the girl does. The order in which the time of events appear are manipulated and change throughout the video, the changes within the plot interrupts the temporal order and this therefore makes the video abstract.

Spatial...

In the Let forever be video the spatial theory applies, continuity editing is used, this style of editing allows analytical space to be created through the use of an establishing shot, followed by mid shots and transactions, showing more than one point of view of the location. Within the video crosscutting editing is used, this allows the audience to see when the location is changing.

Andrew Goodwins' Theory

The video for live forever follows Goodwin's theory of amplification because it doesn’t contradict the lyrics but it creates a new meaning, such as following and showing the sequence of the girls everyday routine, then repeating this, so that the audience can visually build up a story.

Target Audience for Chemical brothers...

The demographic for this dance electronic music (DEM) video is for those who go to nightclubs, people that attend places that are based on entertainment upon music, base guitar fans and most of all dance electronic fans.

Research On Chemical Brothers 3...

Transitions...

The transitions within the video allows a small budget video to become successful as it adds length to the video and makes it look profession and Interesting to watch, as the video is abstract, its compliments the songs, as the audience enjoy the music as well as the video.

Let forever be...

The cinematography of the video allows the audience to feel as if the are looking in on some-body’s life, and actually feel involved within the video.

The dancer in the video is the same girl the whole way throughout, with effects edited to make each shot look different and to fit in with the ‘funky’ dance style relating to the genre of electronic music.

Research On Chemical Brothers 1...

What genre it is- does it feature the expected conventions of that genre (confirm) or does it challenge them?

Genre: Dance / Electronic

The conventions of the genre:

The focus is generally on the music and not the image of the band, this is why they aren’t seen in the video. This means that the videos can be really abstract, relating to Goodwin's theory of amplification – extracting a meaning from the video.

Ideas of where to film...

Above are some possible locations that i went around and took photos off. I feel that these would work really successfully, as when edited in on photo shop, playing with the brightness and contrast would allow the genre really to come through.
Below are some other location ideas:

-Beach?
-PDH/Drama Rooms (Live Music)?
-Local Alleyways?
-Dark Places?
-Dirty/Dingy Places?
-Forest/Woods?

The roles within the Group

-Andrew – Organizing Musicians to come and perform in the music video in the Live Music sections.
-Georgina – Maybe acting as “character” in the narrative sections of the Music Video. Also in charge of organization (such as Shooting Schedules).
-John – In the video as the DJ – using the decks as heard in the track. Also thinking about the image of the band.
James - Filming, editing

Target Audience we are aiming for...

-People who are fans of the genre(s) – those who are loyal to Alternative Rock, Electronic Rock and Drum n Bass,
-Age group between 17-25, the age that enjoy clubbing (this is the sort of song that will be heard in the venue),
-Groups that enjoy the aggressive type of music,
-Can appeal to both Males and Females even though the band is male orientated,

Image Ideas for the Band

-Dark
-Aggressive/Fierce
-Tatoos
-Male Orientated
-Silhouetted Members
-Cold Lighting – Blues, Purples etc.
-Instruments (Drums, Guitars etc.)

The song choice - Pendulum, tranatula

-“Tarantula” by Pendulum
-No Music Video was made for this track, but there is a clip of the live performance
-Originally Reggae – this was not possible, and this song was close enough to our original style.

Genre Of our song

-Alternative Rock/Drum n Bass Fusion
-Fast Tempos,
-Synthesized and Electronic,
-Loud and Aggressive,

Video Ideas

- Band shot, on the drums
Live Music Section - band shots
Follows Some Sort Of Narrative
Shocking Images - drugs, alcohol
Symbols (e.g. tattoo/stencil of tarantula)

Story Boarding 1

After brain storming our ideas, we finalized our ideas and presented them in the form of a storyboard. Within each shot we included a picture of what would be in the shot, the timing of the shot, the shot type and also the editing, such as which transition would b to the next shot. By doing this planning it enabled us to be clear in what we were doing and allowed us to identify all the props we needed within the video. When planning each frame, we played the track of our song, 'Tarantula', this ensured we got the timing as accurate as possible.

Mood Board

Throughout the planning and researching process, i created a mood board of images, that reflected and related to my genre. The above images, are either stereotypical characters that are usually related to this genre, or band ideas that we have. From doing this it has allowed me to think more openly and a bit outside of the box.

Gendre Table

The Prodigy

Above are images that I have extracted from The prodigy fans site. The images show the band members, and i feel it it is important to research the types of band members in order to ensure that my video and a real music extract has similar codes and conventions in order for me to succeed in having a successful music video. From these images I have been inspired already of appropriate costume, such as jeans, and tattoos, and also effective shot types/ angles, such as the diagonal and close ups.
